Netizen fatigue

Posted by urbanara on June 8, 2006

The word 'netizen' is an English word loved in Korea although it's not a Konglish which means localized English only understood by Koreans. The word 'netizen' was invented by a 23 year old Michael Hauben but now the term is most frequently used in Korea.

At first, the word was used to describe the people who use internet. Today this usage is no longer valid because practically all active Korean population is using internet. Now the word is used to designate people who vocalize in the cyber world. The image of the word becomes increasingly negative due to the erratic behavior of the netizens.

Korean JPO test

Posted by urbanara on May 14, 2006

I had a really tough week. Now I thank this week finally has finished. I had to take two tests for five days and encountered two unusual and unpleasant accidents during the week. One test was JPO (Junior Professional Officer) for the United Nations and the other was National Urban Planner License Exam which took place today. I surely had a lot of stress but I can't easily expect success because my preparation was not enough for both of the exams.

JPO is a special internship program of the UN but it is financed by national governments.  UN internship is a shortcut for regular jobs in the UN but the poor UN never pays interns. Many nations want more of their nationals work in the UN, so they select JPOs and pay them instead of the UN.

La confession de Sa Majesté

Posted by urbanara on May 3, 2006

(Click here for automatic translation in English.)

Read the rest of this entry »

An impressive move from Korean government

Posted by urbanara on April 26, 2006

I was worried that the fast made policies regarding half-blood children from Ward's visit would be soon forgotten after his departure. I was happily wrong this time. The government presented some impressive and radical (in Korean standard) policy measures on 26 April.

The meeting participated by the President concerned mainly familial support for marital immigrants. The meeting produced following proposals.

1. Familial allowance and medical service will be offered to foreign brides even before they acquire Korean nationality.

2. The illegal activites of marriage brokers will be dealt with by amending International Marriage Law.

3. Hotline (1366) and shelters will be made for foreigners.

4. Anti-Discrimination Act will be enacted.

5. The text books stressing Korea as a pure blooded nation and containing racial discrimination will be modified to be multi-cultural and respecting human rights.

6. The word "mixed-blood person(혼혈인)" will be changed to a more politically correct one.

7. The children between Koreans and non-Koreans living in overseas, notably Korean-Vietnamese, will be able to get Korean nationality a lot easier.

(The above policies were translated from this article.)

inconvenience of two Koreas

Posted by urbanara on April 20, 2006

Many South Koreans say they feel sad or strange when they are asked from which Korea. It happens when they go abroad. When asked of the origine, they say just "Korea" most time. For them, the only valid Korea is South and North Korea is a country in oblivion. (North Korea is an important news source but ordinary people can't feel the country because there's little exchange between two nations. Very few North Koreans around and no North Korean products.) The practical reason may be there's very few North Koreans abroad. As a North Korean, you should be a really special person to be abroad. You should be either someone who will never betray North Korean regime or who already betrayed it. So South Koreans think there shouldn't be any North Korean around them wherever they are.

China, Korea and Japan

Posted by urbanara on April 17, 2006

CKJ have lived together more than 2000 years. The exchange between three countries was less intense than that of among European countries but it is ever growing today. These countries (3 in perception but 5 in reality) were grouped in different ways.

1. CKJ

2. CK and J

3. C and KJ

4. CJ and K

The Promise(武士) features main actors from three countries: Jang Dong-Kun from Korea, Hiroyuki Sanada from Japan and Cheung Pak-Chi from China.
